My passion for photography first developed in the early 1970s with my studies in urban design at the University of Oregon, Eugene. During my subsequent professional career in building and urban development, my photography was an intrinsic element in my design and planning. In addition, during the past twenty-five years, I have steadily practiced Zen Buddhism. My photography has become deeply influenced by what I have learned from Zen.
Whether I have been filming my neighborhood excursions in Seattle, backpacking trips into the Cascade Mountains of Washington State, or frequent travels through the US and Europe with my wife, Diana, my photographic calling has been a continual opportunity for spiritual practice.

With the influence of my Zen practice, photography for me is about stopping thought and moving purely into light, smell, sound, breath and heart. When I photograph I practice moving out of the thinking realm and into the moment. At this point I see the light, sound, smell and texture of the subject. My goal is not to judge, not to say what is good or bad, or too blue or too green. Just to be present with that moment, with that experience, is what I try to evoke in my images.
